Character Design is an important skill in storytelling. This workshop is designed to help improve your technical and analytical abilities when it comes to characters and how they function in their worlds.

You will learn how to examine other artists’ techniques, a proper method for reference studies, a clear system for character structure, and a bit of color harmony to help us build appealing color combinations for our characters, and finally, the ability to place our character in space.

Is this class for me?

This class is for motivated artists who are eager to learn the foundation of character design, and to get a solid start on building their portfolio in creating characters for storytellers.

Tell me more about meetings and communication?

This is a recorded course featuring a streamlined, 5-module system made up of short, easy-to-digest videos that you can complete within a single month. You will learn at your own pace, but you aren't doing it alone—we use Discord for daily communication, community connection, and support from our dedicated team, alongside a personal review of your work by the instructor.

Since this is a recorded class, how does access work?

You don't have to worry about missing a live session! You will find all the video modules secured on the RAD website, allowing you to watch, pause, and rewatch the lectures whenever it fits your schedule so you can truly master the concepts.

Where do I submit my assignments?

On the RAD Learning Program platform. Our team will provide you with daily support through Discord, and your core assignments will be personally reviewed by our instructor, award-winning book maker Layal Idriss, to help guide your progress.

What tools do I need to have to complete my projects?

We are completely open and flexible with the choice of software and tools you use to produce your art. While this practical course is optimized for the digital world, traditional media artists can easily follow along and achieve the exact same brilliant results.

Mandatory tools?

If you work digitally, your preferred software (like Procreate or Photoshop) and a tablet. If you work traditionally, your favorite painting or coloring tools (like gouache, acrylics, watercolors, or markers) and a sketchbook to archive your progress. You'll also just need a device with Discord installed to stay connected with the class!
